Hello, my name is Ana and i'm from portugal. I have EDS but here there aren't many doctors who know what this is. I'm about to have a surgery to correct my bunions, but i'm a little afraid. Does any one knows if there is a problem with this kind of surgery. Please tell me anything:

I don't have personal knowledge but an EDS friend had bunion surgery which was a great failure and has left her with worse feet than before. The surgeon commented that he'd never had problems with this type of surgery previously. The same friend had a spinal fusion with a plate and was told this was a safe procedure but the vertebrae moved and somehow dislodged the plate. Again she had been assured that this was a very safe procedure. I have heard of other EDS/HMS people who have been worse off after surgery but you would probably have to decide whether the risk is worth it. Does your surgeon know you have EDS? How much does he know about the condition?

My mom is hypermobile and had her bunions removed about 6 years ago with no complications. She does recall that she was quite sore for several weeks. Good luck!

This is an interesting thread, because my husband had a tonsillectomy. (He's HMS, possible EDS). It's now been about 2 months, and he is having trouble swallowing, and the tissue in the throat feels very "tight" and painful. This is a little scary, because the post-surgery stuff should feel a lot better by now. I was worried that he was having this surgery, because i know his tissues are abnormal, and i was afraid they might get messed up in a way a normal person's wouldn't as a result. Any comments or insights?
