I don't know if this helps any but I have one toe on my right foot that is shorter than it should be. I injured the foot when I was a child (before they found out I had
EDS former Type III/Hypermobility) and everyone thought I'd just sprained it. I remember being in horrible pain and no one could undestand why I was limping for
more than a month after. They thought I was faking it and just trying to get attention!! Well, my feet are a normal size 7 except the one short toe and I now think it
was dislocated and when my feet grew, it became shorter than the rest of my toes. I don't know if what you are going through is the same thing (unless you were
born with the foot trouble). Have you had yourself checked out by a specialist?

Yes and he said " well that's odd isn't it" and that was about it. I was born this way but it has lead to alot of complications
I now have a new bit of bone growing on the top of my foot. Its discusting I know.
Thanks anyway

Yes. This is commonly known as "Morton's toe."

Hi, I just noticed this message, its kind of not relevant but I find that my fingers are BADLY disformed. I mean really noticeably, the joints are all wider than the finger bone itself and they all bend in various directions (sideways). Its not a flexibility thing - they're just all sort of fixed higgldy-piggldy. . . . I wish I had normal looking fingers but I guess it just genetics.

hello-i've got freaky feet too! my husband says it looks as if my toes grow from the top rather than the end of my feet, this makes me claw toed. they also bend down so if i try to straighten them theres a bump in the middle. my fingers are also weird and bend slightly at the joint in the middle which makes them go in directions rather than the right ones. also i have extremely slim feet with a big high arch.
i was just thinking what a great party piece we'd all make with such odd looking fingers, toes knees etc!!!just kidding.

how weird, i too have fingers that go at very squint angles - enough to be noticed and me to be teased about, without my mentioning it - and toes that are like claws and humped in the middle...what next?!

They do look really strange don't they? I'm inclined to say that they look almost like witches fingers (but no offense to anyone else - I'm just commenting on me here!!!). Do you find that the worst finger is the longest one? Mine curve towards the little finger REALLY obviously. Some of them go in different directions, like an s-shape (especially that top joint). It kind of looks like they've all been broken and put back together wrongly . .
I can't say that I identify with the feet/toes so much - they're just very long and thin. The problem this causes is finding shoes that fit around the sides, which was a big problem for my mum when I was younger.

About party pieces . . I know that it's not good to be amazed by things like this, but I met someone last week (who didn't have EDS) who could touch their nose with their tongue. . .I was so amazed because I though it wasn't something that could really be done.

my toes used to be curled all the time like making a fist with it.They looked as if I wore shoes 2 sizes too small.I managed through exercises to straighten them a bit.Unfortunately, I might add, 'cause since then my foot-bones give way more often.Seemes they lost muscle tension that the fisted toes were giving them (just a theorie of my own ).
My fingers used to be fine.I could and still can bend them backwords in a 90 degrees angle without problems also I can bend the tops of my fingers seperetly from the rest without aid (looks like e.t.). But only since about 2 yrs they havebecome a painfull mobile problem.Since then it seemes as if they are slowly turming sideways.I mean if I lay my hand down relaxed it seemes as if my fingers were taken out of my hand turned a 1/4 and then put back.I first noticed it a couple of months ago and since then it seemes to get worse but that might be my imagination. It doesn't cause any pain itself, It's just a strange thing to see.

as i read the messages that have been left since mine yesterday my hubby was stood behind me laughing that we were all talking about our toes and fingers. ive always maintained that it was him with odd feet and mine were perfectly normal!!oh well i lost that arguement!! whilst we're on the subject does anyone else have legs and arms that bend oddly too? mine are not lined up properly. if my knees are pointing forward then my feet are sticking outwards but if my feet are pointing forwards then my knees face inwards. when i was at school a surgeon thought it would be a good idea to saw through my legs at the thigh and at the knee, straighten them up and then put pins in and then put me in plaster for 3 months!! i wouldn't have it done because i was more interested in going out and exploring the world of beer and boys( i didn't think i'd be able to do either with metal poles through my lower body). looking back now its seems my wayward youth saved my legs!!!!listen to me talking as if i'm a pensioner- i'm only 23!

ps i'm sure that all this typing is not doing my wrists any good- does anyone use voice activated software- is it any good?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Geri on Friday, January 05, 2001 - 01:12 pm:

Yes!!! I so agree with you about the knees! They are pretty much in line with the ankle-bone aren't they? I haven't ever had any options of metal pins though (ouch that sounds so painful) I just tend to accept that I've got strange double joints that thankfully don't cause pain like the other people who write here. It would've been horrible to have had legs full of scafolding though, sounds like you made a good choice there!
on arms - my mum (who is double-jointed also) has arms which twist the wrong way all the time. Her elbow is always at the top when her hand is palm side down, which looks very strange.

About voice-activated software. I tried DragonDictate for my college work and its not that great. Everything I said was interpreted wrong - it was very funny, but not useful. If you said 'eat' it would type something like 'parliament'and any small noise would make it type some silly word or other. Then again, another program might be much better. . .

Re. voice-activated, I too found no reliability with dictation - I was very glad I checked my bachelor's dissertation as exacerbation had been interpreted as masterbation....hard to explain that as a "typo" if people don't know voice-activated has been used! I just hope technology improves in the next few years as I am unable to do much typing or wrtiting now.

Re. Geri and finger direction - yep mine go that way too.

I've been too busy to stop and check the board lately, but my toes are funny. My parents took me to an ortho in Hollywood to get them checked out when I was little. I remember arguing with the nurse that I shouldn't have to take off all my clothes and put on the ghastly gown just for him to see my toes. I lost, but he said there was nothing to worry about. I walked out triumphant, however, because ALL he looked at were my toes!
The end joint of the second toe points to 2 o'clock (R) and 10 o"clock (L). The second joint is slightly bent sideways. I have no bumps, they just go to the side. My pointer fingers are also bent, but rotated just a little toward the middle fingers so the nail is not right on top. One of my DES children also has the bent toes and fingers.
I was interested in the long narrow feet. I don't have that, but my two EDS kids do. Their feet dislocate all the time. Mine don't, they just ache and make walking miserable sometimes. I have to choose my shoes with great care.

patty- i know what you mean about the shoes. i can't wear pretty shoes like other women so i'm always in doc martins boots or boots that fasten high up the ankle. if not then shoes just fall off my feet bacause they're so thin and heels just kill my knees and ankles! oh well at least i'm always in jeans.

On the subject of fingers again . . . does anyone else find that the middle (and some of the upper) joints are exceptionally wide in comparison to the actual finger itself?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Patty on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 05:02 pm:

Geri, I haven't compared that joint of my fingers with anyone else's! I'll have to take a look!
Heather, we have subluxing tendons over the outer ankle bone that become very painful when we wear shoes that come up over it. My son couldn't wear basketball shoes and when he was in high school here in the Philippines there were no other size 14 sport shoes - or any kind of shoe for that matter! We had a real problem. Consider yourself fortunate that you can wear boots!

Finally, us freaks can unite! My feet are atrocious; my toes look like I have been stuffing them into too tight shoes for years because both my little toes have broken so many times from my ankles giving way and bashing them into things! My hands have witches fingers too Geri; in fact it was the thing that convinced my new doctor tha I had something real wrong with me. The previous doctor said it was a psychosomantic effect of depression, but the new guy took one look at my hands and said; oh yeah right, as if you could do that to yourself! As for party pieces; I have a deformed ear; where the ligament never grew properly at the very top, as if someone had nibbled on it; only since diagnosis with HMS does this make some sense. What's any one else's weirdest bit?

I am new to this, so bear with me. When I was born, my left foot pointed to the left. When I started (trying to) walk, the doctor had these orthopedic shoes made for me, that held my feet upright and proper. Still, my foot tended to rest to the left. He moved the shoe inward. So, instead of it now being straight, it rests inward, toward my right foot. It took a long time to teach myself to point my foot forward as I walk.

My weirdest bit would have to be my tongue. I can put it out, turn it up and lick my nose. It used to be one of my more disgusting party pieces in my teens. The rest of me looks relatively normal, probably because I only have the condition mildly and it never became a problem until after my pregnancy when ligaments started to relax prior to labour.

my knees are pointed slightly inward but my feet straight from fallen anlkes. i also have on the side of my foot a piece of bone syicking out under the skin, the bones of my foot have fallen over so much. my left foot is slightly inward at times also because my left hip is rotated in, i never noticed until my physical therapist pointed it out.

My feet are awful (the left much worse than the right) - in fact my doctor said I would need two years of corrective surgery (i.e. three major ops) to get them right. I have real problems getting shoes to fit and when I do they are trashed within a few weeks. I hate wearing sandals or going barefoot because I'm too embarrassed about my feet
