Hi Myke, They do limit your ROM but I don't find that particullarly helpfull when typing. I use a speechrecoginition program. I study Latin and Greek so there where a lot of words I had to add myself but after I did that it seems to be working just fine.

Murphy splints do the same thing but aren't as effective or attractive. They are made of stainless steel and harder to adjust.

I highly recommend silver ring splints!!! They alone have saved my career as a violinist. (No, I have no connection to the company, I'm just a happy and grateful wearer). They help me with typing and writing as well, you can have them custom built for the specific problems you have for each joint.

Hi has anyone with these splints been able to wear them while using a walking stick/crutch? I dont think they look strong enough to withhold the strain of my leaning on a stick. Seen as this is the only time I really have problems with fingers subluxing the splints wont be worthwhile if they arent sturdy enough so if someone could help please

I've no experience wearing them while using
crutches. but I can't use them while riding my wheelchair caus they fall of my fingers.
(I've got them for my DIP joints)
They are very strong though, I dont think that would be the problem.
perhaps asking a retailer for advice.

Well lets say im not suprised to hear that my OT is not allowed to order me any ring splints because they cost £30 each. I would pay for them if I knew they would work, but no not given the choice. Dam NHS. So trying a homemade alternative and going to solder two silver rings together and see if that helps.

I don't think it'll work.

Solder is quite flexible. (Acid or Rosen core) You'd be best off the weld and then grind and smooth the joint.

Many years of electronics engineering has taught me that soldering to REALLY big (relatively) things is difficult (heatsink effect - much thermal mass) and unless you use the right solder - you're not going to get the joint (no connective pun intended ;) you want.

I think arc welding and then grinding would work best.

I was intending to use silver solder. I'm a jeweller in my spare time (somewhat more serious than a hobby jeweller, but not brave enough to leave the security of a regular salary!) so I've got all the right equipment. Silversmithing soldering is done with a blowtorch and sterling silver as the solder, so I think that should provide a decent joint.

Ros if you are considering trying the same make sure that you shave off the edge of one rings so the rings join better making the join more solid. Not easy to explin in text lol hoping hubby gets mine done soon or im going gothic and buying one of their full finger rings *Urgh* might be able to pull the nail bit of one and make it look bit better. (No offence to goths just Im a biker and stuck in my ways lol)
