I am 20 years old I sustained a wrist injury 20 months ago, went undetected for 6 months, 6 months later found TFCC tear and tendon tear, 8 months later led to
Kienbock's disease, NOW thumb has been in terrible pain, found now that it is Hyper extended and clicking out over the top of the wrist, doctor is talking fuison in
4 weeks, Is this NORMAL happening when we "sprain a wrist" or from Ligament damage? why is this happening? has any one had fusions or major problems come
out of a sprained wrist? I know I keep saying sprained, that is becasue that is how the first Doctor treated it for months and with OT.

Hi Anthony!

I am in pretty much the same bout. I too received an injury to my wrist 2 yrs ago and it wasn't detected until a year later. I have torn my ligaments and tendons to. I
am having surgery next week to see if repair is possible. I have had complications like yours also. My thumb clicks in the same place too. I have daily discomfort and
stiffness like yourself. My consultant has told me a few options: one it to reconstruct the torn soft tissue and the other is to put in a metal plate to see if this will help. I
do not know what advice to give you I guess we are both a little stuck. I wish you good luck and let me know if you find a solution!

Beware of soft tissue surgery with EDS - each soft tissue repair I've had has not worked! Sorry to be negative, but I wish someone had warned me BEFORE I had
the soft tissue repairs. My hand surgeon Prof. Stanley has told me that soft tissue surgery can be disaterous as due to the collagen disease, they may NEVER

Anthony, you really do sound desperate. Have you considered that people haven't replied because they don't feel they can offer any advice at present. My thumbs
started behaving the way yours seem to be doing and have been very sore but I find I can generally pull them back into an approximation of where they should be so
haven't mentioned them to my doctor. I really can't come up with any suggestions except perhaps that you ask for a second opinion if you feel uncomfortable with
your doctor's suggestion. Good Luck and Best wishes.

maybe No one has been reading post for a few days BUT I am despreat for some feed back!! I don't have medical insurance right now and will not go back to the
Dr. or diagnosed me with this, since that is where my troubles began. I don't know where to turn> I am on worker Comp and I do have all faith in the Dr I am
seeing.... but.... would like to here from other EDSers on this situation or others like it thank you Anthony

Hey Anthony Don't dispair!! I had a 'sprained' wrist when I was 19 (8 years ago). After many unsuccessful operations, I had the whole wrist fused last May - best
thing I've ever had done!! Iknow this is much more extensive than a fused thumb but believe me, no more pain, total stability etc. I also know a young lad (26) who
also has EDS and both thumbs fused!! Best thing he ever did too! I'm so pleased with the result, I'm waiting to have the distal radial ulna joint fused in the very near
future. I know a fusion sounds drastic, and is, but believe me, I PROMISE you it won't be half as bad as you think, if YOU decide that is what's best for you. It was
of the way that I reacted that the medics first realised I had EDS - I had torn everything in my wrist from a very minor injury, most people would have merely
sprained theirs. I went back to college 2 years ago, and now have a HND in Computer Science. I am now topping this up into a degree commening Sept 2000, after
my next bout of surgery. I can use computer much better and longer after the fusion. Just make sure it's what you want opposed to your doctor. Very good luck and

Just an update on my thumb fusion, I have four
more weeks in this cast, I still have pain but I
don't think it's the thumb? Yelled at the doc the
other day at my cast change he positioned the cast
wrong and in order for me to use my hand like I
was instruted to do, I have to turn at the
shoulder, and presto magic the whole shoulder
comes out, (not my reg doc) So now off to go and
get a cast change hopefully for the last time! fix
one thing weaken another, It's going to take me a
very long time to get this arm in working order,
it looks like it belongs in a biafra poster

NEW NEWS REGARDING FUSION! Well went to the doc
today, the thumb was feeling pretty loose, we all
know what that means, Well the fusion has taken
just fine, but the joints around the base of the
thumb are
compensating for the lack of motion, so now I
guess I am hyperextending those ligaments cause I
am experiencing new pain and alot of movement,
What do we do to cure this? My doc is stumped once
again, I need a doc who specializes in Loose
joints any suggestions for a doc in N>Y> area
