I have had HMS all my life (now 30) and I am getting worse. I noticed for a long time i was losing muscle tone in the area from the knee to the hip and the calf muscles had increased compensating for bad knees and making the lower legs work more. I finally had enough and started to look at better ways of doing things. Firstly i went to my specialist (took 5 months to get in), then i went and saw my local physio and then i went to see the people at the local gym and also made an appointment at the dietian. Firstly the physio was fantastic and very understanding and has started very very slowly to increase the muscle tone around the knee cap which have moved through a set of exersizes. It is going to be a long haul with the building of exersizes one at a time. The most interesting thing i found out was from the gym. I used to have a sleep for 2 hours at miday every day or when i could grab it i felt so tired. I explained this to the gym and the man suggested that if it took people with HMS twice as much energy to do the things that normal poeple do maybe I wasn't eating enough fueling foods and put me on to a book that is called the GI factor. I don't know if it is availble outside Australia. It is one of the most interesting books I have read. It is getting back to nature to way we were before processed foods were about. I have totally changed my way of eating and not to what you would think. The physio and the man from the gym will be talking together and setting up an exersize program for me. It is going to be a very slow haul but i am going to put my all into it, it is not the quanity of my life now it is going to be the quality. I have yet to start at the gym because of easter, but will pay my first visit soon after. I am looking forward to be fit again (well half fit) and also to losing some weight, which i have lost a pound maybe a little more from following the guides in this book. This is not a diet book just simply eating natural products.
I would like to hear from anyone who is doing a similar thing or any views on it .
Thanks for reading

Good for you Kate
I have come to that conclusion on my own,I wish I had had someone to show me what to do,I started out working on the theory that if pain killers don't work for me something else must do.
I know others are in a worse position than myself,I have benign Hypermobilty mobility syndrome, and that not everything works for others but it's good to know others are finding a way that works for them.
Good luck,keep well Jonathan B

I guess I'm lucky that my hypermobility has only shown in my feet and back. Of course, I have had serious back problems and headaches for about 10 yrs. A physical therapist put me on a strengthening program that seems to be helping. The theory is to have the muscles do the work the ligaments aren't doing. Hope it works for you (and for me -- I'm still in the process and don't have any definitive results yet).

Read the book called Pain Free by Peter Egoscue. It is excellent...
