Sorry to hear you have so many side effects from these drugs, Erika. The only non-narcotic thing that gives me any pain relief at all is heat - hot water bottles, and a heat gel sold as 'finalgon' here in Aust. (I like this gel because its hotter than normal 'deep heat', and it doesn't have stinky menthol in it). I'll be interested to hear if others have any better ideas, though. Even though I have no side effects from the narcotics, I'd like to be able to take less.

I know a few people who have tried 'hippie' remedies such as aromatherapy, (light) massage and meditation techniques. Can't vouch for any of them myself as yet, but I guess anythings worth a try...

hi all

i am very much into aromatherapy and massage and i do find that it helps, i find reflexology to be the best using ginger oil, or black pepper oil and even lemon helps as its a natural anti inflammatory

although they dont take all the pain away the really help with relaxation, i have been in the most dreadful pain and taken morphine and it not really helping that good and then twenty four hours later having a foot massage and it almost sending me to sleep
i do suggest that you try massage, due to the benefits i found from it i have strated a course in advanced aromatherapy amd massage to try and learn new tricks that will help

one other thing i take is slow release tramadol which i find to be an effective painkiller

if anyone wants anymore info on the aromatherapy or just someone to talk to please email me

I to have weekly massage (1 hr professional per week) but can only use PLAIN oil, when they add fragrances and aromatherapy oils to the massage oil, I get rashes and my skin burns like someone has poured hot to boiling oil over me (not a Good thing). I can;t use Tiger balm for this reason as I get severe burns from it I look and feel like I have been doused in boiling oil (I don;t know what it is in these but I tend to stick with Plain oils). I do love using aromatherapy oils in a burner and find some very soothing (I particularly like Vanilla and Lavender) I have to be careful even then as some cause asthma atacks if the smell is too strong.
I tried Tramadol but alas I was allergic (nothing new to me at present, I seem to get more allergies everyday, some serious enough to warrant me having to wear a Medic Alert braclet 24/7 now (tramadol is one of 3 major ones listed the other 2 being Oxycodone and also cephalosporin antibiotics (these made my face swell so bad that I had to take steroids for 3-5 days after) I also have my HMS and RSD on my Medic Alert just in case....
