Hey Kathy,
I am afraid that Naproxen is the trouble maker. Maybe you can try with Antra to stop the stomach pain. I read somewhere that it should be better than Zantac. But I think the only good solution is to stop Naproxen. Maybe you can try with a Cox2 Inhibitor (Celebrex, Vioxx)that should work similar on your pain as Naproxen but not dammage your stomach or you can work only with Opiates like oxycontin.

i have recently started to take naproxen and was told by my doctor that it wouldnt have any side effects.... but after reading your posts here i'm beginning to wonder! am i at risk from stomach pains from the medication? i also wondered if these drugs would work? because as you said Kati, it is an anti-infamatory drug, and i have no inflamation! i would love to hear back. i am 16 and have suffered from HEDS for 3 years. thank you so much, becky

hey becky

not sure what strength you are on - that makes a difference. am surprised your doc said no side affects and surprised they put you on it even though no inflam. also i seem to be more sensitive to side affects on all meds not just naproxen. i normally get some relief from nap. but not enough to be worth it. next time u go to doc ask if really necessary to take it esp if u start to get stomach prob. listen to your body - you know it best. i am still having prob w/stom from oxycontin feel sick all the time and not hungry any more. what med are you on now and how is ur stom? am 15 and this (docs dont think its hms but dont know what it is) has been going on past three years.

heya kati,

i'm not sure what strength i'm on either! ... but i take 750mg of naproxen a day. how long roughly after first taking the meds should they start to work, if at all? i havnt noticed anything after a little over a week in pain-relief, but i have developed really itchy skin, no rashes or anything though. ive heard this is quite common from the narproxen. it feels like my skin is burning up. my stomach is still completely fine which is good!

please feel free to email me, it would be great to get into contact with another person who understands what im going through...

thank you for your help

love becky xxx

I have tried several drugs for the secondary osteoarthritis in my thumbs. Vioxx (cox2 inhibitor) great for inflamation, agony for stomach, tried some other drug that made me have my period half the month along with voltaren/diclofenac. Quit the "period drug" and am now taking Nexium for stomach and continued voltaren for inflamation. No stomach ache, no acid in the esophagus. Am going to ask Doctor for stronger anti-inflamatory though, and have discovered insurance will not cover Nexium (doctor gave me generous amount of sample). When it hurts I still resort to Vicodin/ hydrocodone. Still searching for drugs. Good luck to all.

Naproxen as well as other nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs all possess the potential for stomach ulcers. I am 20 yrs old and already have had 2 of them. COX2 inhibitors inhibit the production of the prostaglandin for inflammation, and not COX1 which protects the stomach barrier. Just beware that this is not 100% true for everyone, and that you cna still get stomach ulcers from any nonsteroidal anti inflammatories. There is a drug out there called cytotec, which if taken before the NSAID it will protect the stomach barrier. The only problem is is that it is not usually given to women of child bearing age, unless adequate birth control mehods are used. It can contribute to abortions.
