In the Jan 2002 issue of Readers Digest there is a short piece on page 48, that describes a study by the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, England. They found that a surprising number of lower back pain suffers had a low grade infection that gets in though the microscopic tears in the disc. The article was originally in a piece by John O'Neil in the New York times. I am having trouble locating more info. if anyone else has more info please let me know
