I am 29 years old and considering prolotherapy with Dr. Kulik in San Diego, CA. I have loose ligaments in lower back, bulging disc in L4/L5, and 24hrs. of pain up and down left side. It's debilitating. We want to get pregnant after the treatment if it works. All my doctors say, as I am now there is no way I could carry a child. Is there anyone with a story of hope for me? Thank you, Need Hope

Dear Need Hope,
I can't totally relate to your situation...I am 43 years old and have had back and neck pain for the last 10 years starting after the birth of my second child, for which I gained more than 60 lbs, way too much weight.
Prior to that, I taught aerobics and was very active. I have been treated for everything under the sun from Lyme disease to up cross syndrome. The pain started 10 days after my daughter was born, and finally we think it is from loose ligaments from all the weight gain. I have not been able to exercise to any capacity for all these years due to increase of pain.
We would like another child, but have not attempted pregnancy due to my pain.
I have had 8 treatments so far, and am starting to see results. My doctor says that in theory, the Prolo. should hold during pregnancy, but he suggests that he get me all the way well first.
I feel hopeful...I would suggest that you put on a normal amount of weight for pregnanc(not double or more) like I did. You can adequately feed your baby by putting on the usual amount of wieght.
I don't think this exactly addressed your problem, but I hope this gives you hope.
Sincerely,
Hopeful

Hey. I've struggled over the past year as a result of some prolotherapy. I had had some that worked well from Felix Linetsky in Florida. I wasn't quite better, and tried to go to Alvin Stein in Plantation, Fl. He didn't adjust me properly when injecting, and I believe as a result of this, other ligaments in my body have loosened up and begun to weaken. Different areas have trouble as time progresses, and none seem to get better. It is not extremely painful, but more parts of my body seem to have trouble all the time. The pain was just in my back and neck, but is now in hips, shoulders, knees, elbows, wrists, ankles, and basically everywhere. I feel I'll need prolotherapy everywhere to stop and fix this problem if it is possible. I'm going to school in Utah, and would like to go to someone out west who is not afraid to treat the body extensively, is patient and skilled in diagnosing the problem correctly, and who is well skilled in manipulation. I'm willing to travel a bit if necessary, but would like to stay out west. I'm 24, and would like to have a full life ahead of me. Any input on my situation, and info on doctors would be appreciated.

Hello. I have some suggestions for you. First, and I have done this myself, never go to a prolotherapist who is not an DO (osteopath), as hopefully they will use manipulation in your treatment. Please understand, however, that new ligament tissue will NOT hold your joints out of place, regardless of whether you are adjusted before. The body simply does not work this way, thankfully. I have experienced similar effects to what you have though, when I have not been adjusted before being injected.
Also, there was a time where I thought that I would need prolotherapy everywhere. It is simply not feasable for me. Changing my diet has had a TREMENDOUS effects as far as pain relief goes. I eat an all natural, all organic foods diet, focusing heavily on green vegetables and colorful fruits, with moderate amounts of protein and fat. If you would like to talk with me more extensively about a diet that might help you with pain, please leave a message here for me and I will try to get in touch with you as soon as possible. Please stay strong.

Thanks Greg. I would love to talk with you more extensively about what you've been through. It's so hard to find someone with anything that sounds like what I've got. My email is citrusgatorr@yahoo.com

I live in OK, so I can't provide info on doctors in your area. But you might try the American Association of Osteopathic Medicine website. You can search for doctors in your area, and the listing will tell you if the doc does prolo or not. The website is http://www.aaomed.org/referrals/. My search turned up five doctors in UT that do prolotherapy.
