I have two important prolotherapy questions. Please
lend your wisdom.

1) Are you aware of harmful side effects of this treatment?

2) I am especially concerned about this because my most serious
hypermobility and sense of misallignment seems to be in my middle
spine and my neck--two essential parts of the body. Has anyone had prolotherapy
in the back.

Thanks in advance.

Paul,

Prolo has been the best treatment I've ever had for hypermobility and pain. I have had prolo ony my neck for two and half months and my upper back for one month. It is painful and somewhat long due to the multiple ligaments in the spine. It has been successful though and my doctor has told me that Prolo is almost always a successful treatment for HMS-EDS, because it is predictable that it is the loos ligaments that cause pain. I've had six treatments and my strong range of motion is starting to return and I can actually hold my head up by itself without straining.
I've heard of all kinds of side effects to prolotherapy. Most doctors have misinformation, because I heard all kidns of negative stuff about prolo, but that stuff was coming from the doctors who didn't even know what EDS was! My side effects are simple and last a short amount of time. There is pain after each treatment, but it's supposed to be that way. I also got dizzy for a few minutes right after my first treatments, but this stopped happening when I ate sugar before being injected. Find a good prolotherapist, and go for it! Stick with it and you'll be glad you did.

Greg

1. There are no known side effects b/c the solution is rather benign (i.e., sugar or saline). However, there is the rare nerve disruption, paralysis, etc., but everything in life has risks.
2. I have had literally every joint (including neck and spine) prolo'd (twice so far)with no problem. And guess what? I'm starting to see small results.

So my friend, GO FOR IT, BUT do so only with a good prolotherapist. I highly recommend Dr. Mark Wheaton in Minnesota (I travel from Alaska to get my treatments). His website is www.wheatons.com

GOOD LUCK, Eppie

I agree w/Greg. My first day was pretty bad, but I knew the pain was temporary and didn't take the vicodin ordered. I've been able to hold my adjustment and the pain is less than before the therapy (I've only been injected once so far). I am definitely looking forward to having the rest. I'm having my lower and mid back and neck done. I know I'll need the pain med for the neck, but the rest I can do without. Walking helps. My DO is in Georgia and Wonderful!! Try and get references or see if a posting has been done about the doctor you are wanting to see. I'm glad I did it.

To those who are interested---I have a very bad SI joint. The prolo. dr. said its the worst he has ever seen. I have had prolo 7 times now, about 25-30 shots each time. He says my SI joint has stablized and looks real good. Normally you only need about 4-5 visits for this problem. I am very hopeful at this point, but I still feel a burning pain going down my leg and some muscle spasms. Is this a normal response while it is healing. Any suggestions or opinions are welcome. I will receive about 2 more series of injections yet.

Dear Lisa,

I have a very good dr. in Virginia for prolotherapy if your interested. He is Dr. Robert Wagner, (703)560-8280. He has about 5-6 offices in and around Alexandria and Fairfax, Va. I am in my last stages of prolotherapy and it has help me alot. He is very persistant in finding the root of your problem. Keep in touch with me and let me know how you do.

You can find good prolo doctors in the back of Dr Hauser's book. There is also a list on Dr Thomas Dorman's website that I posted under another topic. For anyone who didn't see that:

Go to Dr Thomas Dorman's website www.dormanpub.com

Once you have entered the site, go to the menu on the right-hand side and click on 'Find A Doctor'. Then check the box prolotherapy and select your country or state and hit search and a list will come up.

As I said in the other post, I went to 2 doctors in Australia from that list that I wasn't too thrilled with, but I did find the only good prolo doctor in Australia on that list. So make sure you check them out before going.
